NSW: New MRI scanner in place at RPA hospital

A new MRI scanner has been installed at Sydney's Royal Prince Alfred hospital in a
$2.5 million operation.

A hospital spokeswoman says a 13-storey high crane was purpose built to swing the four-tonne
machine into the RPA's new Clinical Services building.

And it took about 20 workers nearly two hours to lower the scanner through the roof
top and into place.

The spokeswoman says the scanner will be tested before it is put to use early next year.

The scanner is essential in the detection of stroke, a variety of muscular skeletal
disorders, brain tumours and other cancers.

It's part of RPA's $250 million overhaul, which will allow the hospital to treat 20
per cent more patients by 2006.
